HISTORY OF TAROT

 Where do I begin  ... There are so many myths and legends re how Tarot started that it is so important to do some research yourself before making blanket statements that are incorrect  in relation to Tarot History ... 

This is what I have discovered on my years of working with Tarot ....  

Tarot began has a game in Europe now through many cultures there are variations of  card games that have now become used for Divination and Tarot is one of them ... There were many card games,  using cards called -Trionfi,  some were tarocchi , tarock, konigrufen as well as the French Tarot  throughout Europe.  

Playing cards first entered Europe through the 14th Century and  and during the 15th Century Tarot packs were created for example The Visconti-Sforza was handpainted, commissioned for the family ...

Next look  into Tarot de Marseille ..
This style deck like the Visconti-Sforza was at first handpainted then when the printing presses were created the market for these decks grew.. Now there were many stories re the Tarot needing to be hidden because of the Church ... There are many variants of  TdM  styled  decks from within Europe with their own particular style .. From there  1908 approx  and published by 1909 created  by Arthur E Waite and Pamela Colman- Smith together  the Rider Waite Smith or variations of that name  a deck that added scenes to the Minor Arcana  instead of like the pips of the TdM styled decks. ..

Next Thoth Tarot designed and created  by Aleister Crowley and Lady Freida Harris ...  Click Here for more details re this creation ... This was created  in approx 1948 and published after they had passed in 1968 approx.  This deck is quite unique in its approach to Tarot , including aspects of Astrology and Kabballah.   Over the years with different publishers you will find different sizes, cardstock of this deck, you may find colours may also differ due to the printers at the time ..

With keywords on the Minor Arcana it was my first Tarot deck that allowed me to read easily .. 
(Approx first published in 1988 - I have had to replace my deck with the Newer US Games cardstock )

This deck combines many aspects of Tarot within it's creation. The Guidebook is in depth and takes some time to work through and understand .. 
First published by  Schiffer in 2012. 


There are so many decks created which include a variety of themes and media styles. There are so many to choose from whether you decide on using one deck  or using many decks, whether you are a user of tarot or maybe also a collector, there is no one perfect deck for everyone ..  We as readers are all so different and have different tastes, different reading styles - this is what I love about Tarot ... 
Now as we approach towards the end of 2021 ready for 2022  we find ourselves maybe feeling overwhelmed by the variety of decks being published, rereleased and created whether they are decks put out there as Mass market or Indie decks self-published or by being printed on Print-on-demand sites , the choices are many.. And only YOU can decide what deck or decks you wish to purchase... 
Do not let anyone make you feel guilty for your Choices .. Is that One deck  or is that Thousands of decks .. Your Choice ...

There are many ways to read this Spread.. Trust in how you choose to read it . This is one variation ...  Let us begin  by looking at the centre card 1) The Rider - News .. there is some news on it's way, what type of News, let's see what the other cards say, to modify the card related to the News ...  We look to the Left and we see Letter - so we know the news may be written .. To the right A Woman - is the written news from a woman or to the woman?    Above The Stars - maybe it is Spiritual  News on some level ...  Underneath - The Bear - Could be related to a Mother or are you the Mother... How I Connect With The Cards...

The Way I Connect with the Cards, the messages as individuals for each person. Knowing that each person is so different from another... I understand that everyone is different, All Readers read differently. They may use tools or no  tools . They may use Cards, Runes, I-Ching, Tea-leaves, palms and crystals.. You may even find a reader that connects with jewelry. There are so many ways a reader will read for a client. Even card readers read differently from each other, Some use Tarot, Oracle, or even Lenormand Cards, Others will use playing cards, they use specifically for Readings. You may find some readers read the cards to set meanings and others use them as Gateways to connect with their Spirit Guide to receive individual messages.  There is no One Correct way. Let us begin with the notion that  the cards are ink and paper, created by artists who wish to share a story. The Story developed over time with characters, symbols, colours. Images that allow one to open up within themselves. These are cards that offer both positive and negative aspects of our life.  Each and every card holds both types of messages within them.  I know there are cards like XVI The Tower and XV The Devil  that people gasp at horror and expect negative messages,  X Swords, III Swords are also images that hold people in terror,,, and because of movies  XIII Death  people  think it means Death ....Literal death. The Fool's Journey Through The Wands ....

The Fool, The Student of Life, The Novice, The Young Adventurer, The Dreamer, The Prankster, The Joker ....as He steps out of the darkness into the light, along a path of gravel, He steps through the grass and sees a lone tree ... Why Do Readers Read Cards Differently?

Each Deck is so Different .. There are many different Tarot decks designed by many different amazing individuals… Every deck is perfect in it’s own way… Some images speak louder than others, that is because we as readers are all very different, we are individuals that like and are drawn to different artwork… Also our thoughts processors are individualized.  Our perceptions are individualized.  No one sees the same image in the same card. Different colours, characters, symbols stand out for each of us. That is why you will find different Tarot readers deliver the same messages in a different way.  And sometimes it can take awhile to make sense of a reading.. We as Tarot Readers have to interpret what we see… With our experiences in life so different from each other we interpret things quite differently… I understand there are suggestions in how we read Tarot and there are basic keywords ,  trying to memorise what someone else sees can drive one crazy… I find what works for one re
